Background

  • Global nature and biodiversity is in decline, which puts the the long term sustainability of our climate, society and economy at risk.
  • As a major landowner in the UK, with a mandate to steward the natural environment for the nation, The Crown Estate needed to raise its ambition.

  • However, what good looked like in Nature strategy was not fully established, so it was vital that there was a comprehensive insights process in the development of the strategy.

Solution

  • To build understanding of the topic and the role of The Crown Estate, we looked outside of the business for guidance with an extensive engagement and materiality process. Over 40 nature leaders were consulted across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
  • I supported the Nature team, developing the strategic narrative, framework and comms – culminating in a Parliamentary launch event of the goals and approach.
  • There was a surrounding comms and activation programme, including content and sponsorship of multi-award-winning Sea, Land & City documentary, as well as Blue Earth Summit headline sponsorship with integrated marketing activation.

Impact

  • Secured support from the Secretary of State for The Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and built positive perception with key stakeholders (survey data).
  • The innovative urban activation: ‘Who else lives here?’ – an urban meadow with 42 plant species, sensors, sound and education – created 6m opportunities for the public to engage as part of our people and nature goal.
  • Employee engagement activity included nature walks and guided audio walks – educating hundreds of colleagues on our nature strategy.
